Professor Lan Duong will be speaking about feminist film theory and its applicability to Vietnamese and Vietnamese diasporic cinema. Looking at concepts like the “male gaze” and female desire, Duong will discuss the films of Đặng Nhật Minh, Trần Anh Hùng, Vũ Ngọc Đãng, and Trinh T. Minh-ha. Duong is an associate professor in the Department of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Riverside. Her book, Treacherous Subjects: Gender, Culture, and Trans-Vietnamese Feminism, has just been published by Temple University Press and deals with the themes and practices of collaboration in the films and literature of the Vietnamese and Vietnamese diaspora.
